Hi folks,

It’s a quietly busy time around the farm, as we attend to the many tasks and projects that we’ve said, “I’ll do that in the winter.” Insert eye roll here. 🙄

In other news, the bunnies have been eating my campanula this winter, and I had been telling my cat Pip to take care of that for me. Well, be careful what you wish for. We woke up yesterday to Pip chasing a large, very much alive rabbit running around the house. 🐇 Somehow, he managed to catch it, bring up a ladder, and get through his cat door. Good kitty? 🤣

Currently obsessed with:

• Mohair. This incredibly soft and luxurious fiber comes from the Angora goat. (I already checked to see if I could raise them. They don’t do well in wet climates, very sadly. 😭) I already had a vintage mohair throw on my couch for years, and this year I got a mohair scarf for Christmas and a mohair sweater. I’m hooked. Search ‘vintage mohair’ in Etsy or Poshmark to find so many goodies.

• Timber City non-alcoholic ginger beer. It’s SO gingery. Not at all sweet. And so refreshing with a squeeze of lime. Perfect for your dry January.

• Journaling. I’ve been consistently journaling for a month or so now, and it’s going really well. I recently did the 2026 destination postcard exercise (from this book) and thought you might really enjoy it. Here are the basics: write yourself a postcard from the December 2026 version of you to your January 2026 self. Describe what happened that year. Be specific. Describe how it feels to have achieved your yearly goals. The idea of this is to create a vivid picture from the short-term future that reflects the goal. Pointing to a compelling destination makes the rational mind start to figure out how to get there, instead of obsessing over which way to move or if you need to move at all. When you're at the beginning, don't obsess over the middle, because it'll change as you get there. Look for a strong beginning and a strong ending, and get moving.

With these warm winter days, I like to get my hands in the soil! Here are some winter garden care to-dos.

• Feed any annuals or bi-annuals you are overwintering. Or anything in a greenhouse that is growing. I like to do a fish emulsion liquid feed every month in the winter, plus a hit of this calcium witch’s brew for strong stems.

• Keep an eye out for rodent damage. This is the time of year that voles, rats, and other critters love to eat their hearts out. Clean up, cut back, and try to give them as few places to call home as possible. And get a cat.

• Weed and mulch. It’s a great time to weed, as the ground is saturated and they are easy to pull. Just make sure to mulch anywhere you’ve weeded. No need to do that work again in the spring!

• Resist the urge to cut back your perennial seed heads. The birds are eating your seeds from now until early spring. A messy winter garden = happy birds.

• Clean, sharpen, and oil your tools. Get organized!

• Make your garden plans for the year. Draw out your beds, make your seed starting schedule, and order your seeds and bare roots. I would resist planting seeds unless you’ve got a grow light and are planting perennials.

• My favorite seed companies are Uprising, Jelitto, Select Seeds, and Farmacie Isolde. Go forth and dream!
